MEXICAN BOXERS DRINK URINE FOR PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT

Many spectators of HBO’s 24/7 program were shocked when Juan Manuel Marquez proceeded to drink his own urine in preparation for his bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Epitome of Mexican culture?
However, urine drinking has actually been practiced for centuries by both athletes and poor people around the world. In parts of Mexico where food and water is scarce, villagers are accustomed to drinking their own urine.

On certain holidays they drink the urine of their neighbors in a show of good will. In Puebla, there is actually a local festival named El Chango Santo, in which all the men in the town that are over 65 years old urinate in a big pot full of onion and cilantro leaves. The urine is boiled and vinegar is later added. The brew is then allowed to cool off and is subsequently poured into plastic cups for everyone in the town to enjoy.

Supposedly, this practice signifies a celebration of life and ensures a long existence. Interestingly, people in Puebla do tend to live longer than people in other parts of Mexico, according to statistics.

Nevertheless, this practice is not restricted to Puebla, as people all over Mexico practice urine drinking in all parts of the country. During my absence from the United States, I had the privilege to visit some of the more respected boxing gyms of Mexico and spoke to some fighters regarding their thoughts on urine drinking.

Fighters from all over Mexico are drinking urine, with the procedure varying from town to town. Some fighters insist that the urine must be pure and from a human, while others indicate that it should be mixed with vinegar, blood, or even sperm.

Although most people state that the urine must come from a human source, one boxer told me that Julio Cesar Chavez actually benefited from drinking horse urine. According to this boxer, horse urine is only considered pure for drinking if received directly from the horse at the time of urination and without the use of a container or any recipient. Supposedly urine drunken directly from the horse is great for increasing punching power.

What do Mexican boxers say?
The following are statements from two up-and-coming Mexican boxers regarding urine drinking:

Pablo Montero, strawweight

Translation: "I am from Puebla and I can attest that this is a very common practice. I believe that drinking urine is great for health and I am aware that the great champ Marquez drank urine before his fight with that black guy, Mayweather. Marquez is not from Puebla and he did not know that when you have a big fight like that, you have to drink your trainer's urine too if you want to have better performance and concentration."

Maximino Gomez, lightweight

Translation: I am from Culiacan and the truth is that some people say drinking urine doesn't work. In reality, it works but you have to mix it with sperm from either yourself or someone else. I always masturbate, collect my sperm, and then I immediately drink it. The complicate part is that sometimes you're not supposed to masturbate before a fight. That's why, when I am not training, I keep my sperm in a cup and leave it in the sun for a few days. Usually, I keep about five cups of sperm during training and have enough to drink. The only other alternative is to ask your trainer to give you some sperm but sometimes they charge extra for that. When you don't mix the sperm with the urine, you don't get the same result because urine is an acid and can burn your stomach. You have to alleviate the burning with sperm. That's what most of the boxers in Mexico do."
